Consent when you fear abandonment: practical language for a pause

Fear of losing someone can make a “no,” “not yet” or “I need a pause” feel frightening. But consent is only meaningful when it is freely chosen. You do not have to earn care, prevent an argument, or prove love through sexual contact.

Words to borrow

  • “I care about you, and I need to slow down.”
  • “I’m not ready to decide while I feel this activated.”
  • “I want affection, not sex, right now.”
  • “I changed my mind. Please stop.”

If the response is pressure

Repeated guilt, threats, anger, ignoring a pause, or making safety conditional are warning signs—not a failure to communicate clearly enough. Reach out to someone you trust and seek local support if you feel unsafe. In immediate danger, call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department.
